When I was 9 or 10 years old, I was at our summer church camp in Alabama called “Camp Ambassador.” Softball, swimming pool, talent competitions, and giant pickles were a quarter at the concession stand. I wish I could remember what the chapel message was about, or even what year it was exactly; what I do remember is being filled with the Holy Spirit for the first time, and speaking in tongues that summer at camp!

There were many children there, and it seemed like every single one of us were in the altar on that June night at the evening chapel service when the Lord radically touched my life. No one forced me, or gave me lessons on what to say. I received a genuine filling of the Holy Sprit so deep, it changed me. Instantly. My hands were in the air. My friends and I were praying for one another, all speaking in tongues with power and boldness. It was supernatural. Divine. Glorious. The real power and presence of the Lord filled that old camp tabernacle, just like it had done for many years before. I remember seeing the Love of God in the eyes of my friends from across the room as tears ran down their faces, too. We were all elementary age! All completely full of Jesus and wanting more!

The night I was first filled with the Holy Spirit, I did not stop speaking in tongues for several hours. I didn’t want to leave that new glory I had found, so I lingered.

It got so late that Counselors loaded us in the back of the camp pick up, and off we went, venturing through the foothills, speaking in tongues, tears rolling down our cheeks, worshipping Jesus, being carried back to our cabin.

I remember that moment with vivid detail. The wind, the night sky, the new feeling of love bursting through every fiber of my being. And I know that I’m not the only one who has had this experience, even as a child. I have many friends who experienced lingering as a remnant, not wanting to leave the manifested glory of God.
